EdPolicyWorks in the University of Virginia Curry School of Education seek highly qualified applicants for a two-year post-doctoral research associate position. We are particularly interested in scholars with an interest in quantitative analysis of policies to improve access to and quality of early childhood interventions in low-income communities, interventions leveraging behavioral insights intended to modify the context in which learning occurs at scale, and the effects of interventions or policies to improve teacher effectiveness.
The position is part of the VEST Postdoctoral Program, an interdisciplinary program designed to prepare the incumbent to engage in rigorous research in education science. We are particularly seeking applicants whose experiences and/or prior research motivates them to engage in research on inequities in education that stem from poverty, racial inequity or other emergent demographic realities in U.S. schools. Incumbents participate in research on projects led by a mentor or co-mentor. This research is typically embedded in partnerships with policymakers and practitioners in settings with disproportionate numbers of disadvantaged students. The Research Associate will work with Jim Wyckoff as their primary mentor and will develop a line of research that involves collaboration with one or more secondary mentors and/or involves independent research. Potential secondary mentors include: Daphna Bassok, Ben Castleman, Julie Cohen, Bridget Hamre, Luke Miller, Robert Pianta, Vivian Wong.
The incumbents become part of a network of post-doctoral trainees at the Curry School of Education in research centers including the Center on Educational Policy and Workforce Competitiveness (EdPolicyWorks), the Center for the Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning (CASTL), and Youth-Nex.
A Ph.D. in Education, Education Policy, Public Policy or Economics or a relevant social science discipline is required by the start date of the position. Evidence of substantive knowledge and background in the field of education policy with a focus on quantitative analysis is essential. Strong project management and communication skills are also required. Applicants with a track record of publication are strongly preferred. U.S. citizenship or permanent residency status is required.
Research associates are appointed annually and continuation is dependent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding. Review of applications will begin December 1, 2017 and continue until the positions are filled. Selected trainees must have completed their PhD and be able to begin work by September 1, 2018.
