Senior Researcher - The American Institutes for Research


The American Institutes for Research (AIR) is one of the leading behavioral and social science research organizations in the world. We are currently looking for a Senior Researcher with strong statistics or psychometrics background for our Austin, TX office. The Researcher will work on multiple projects providing support for various research projects, including projects based in Texas through the education research centers.


The Senior Researcher will work on several projects with responsibilities including:

  • Develop conceptual frameworks/logic models that guide project work
  • Design data collection frameworks and/or data crosswalks
  • Lead the design of policy, research studies, and evaluations that apply valid scientific techniques and efficient analyses
  • Evaluate the statistical methods and procedures used to obtain data to ensure validity, applicability, efficiency, and accuracy
  • Analyze, interpret, and report complex quantitative data using appropriate statistical and/or psychometric methods (multiple linear regression, HLM, Structural Equation Modeling, Rasch, and so on)
  • Conduct and lead studies using rigorous designs such as randomized control trials, regression discontinuity, and quasi-experimental designs with tight controls
  • Manage or lead medium to large projects and/or high-profile or high-risk projects (tasks, timelines, outputs, budgets, risk, scope, team members, and conflict and risk management) research projects or tasks
  • Monitor, coordinate, and provide work direction to assigned project staff; providing advice and guidance to staff in terms of appropriate research methods and reporting
  • Develop and manage daily relationships with clients to plan, implement, and present the results of the study while maintaining appropriate professional objectivity
  • Provide assistance to clients for analytical or statistical expertise
  • Serve as a lead expert to the organization applying special, in-depth knowledge
  • Manage proposal efforts and identifying new business opportunities
  • Lead teams in writing proposals and/or grants and evaluation reports, including recommendations
  • Manage and mentor junior research analysts, sharing approaches to solving concrete problems, and provide feedback on the work of others
  • Maintain AIR’s national visibility and presence through conference presentations and writing for refereed journals


  • Ph.D. with 5-7 years of relevant work experience in economics, the social sciences or related field
  • Demonstrated knowledge of K-12 education preferred
  • Able to apply advanced statistical methods and communicate effectively about these methods to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Knowledge of methodology used to collect, analyze, and report quantitative and qualitative data
  • Demonstrated proficiencies in writing, conceptualizing, analyzing, and consulting
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills including strong communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to produce concise, high-level summaries and briefings
  • Experience managing detailed projects and small teams preferred
  • Highly proficient in STATA, R, SPSS or other statistical software preferred and open to learning new statistical tools as required by different projects
