Academic research can and should inform federal education policy, but many scholars are unsure of how they can participate in the policy process or struggle to convey their research to a policy audience. This panel brings together federal policymakers and academics who routinely engage in policy writing and government work in education policy across the executive, legislative, and judicial branches.
Our workshop will offer ideas and strategies for engaging in policy debates and crafting policy-relevant reports and briefs. We will discuss how researchers can effectively comment on regulations and offer tips for writing short pieces like op-eds. We will also share strategies for staying up-to-date on policy debates and facilitate discussion around how to engage with think tanks, advocacy groups, and the media to help communicate with a broader audience. Participants will walk away with a better understanding of how to write for a policy audience and engage in federal education policy debates.
