Abt Associates seeks a qualified Senior Associate or Principal Associate with expertise in education evaluation and strong leadership skills to join our Research, Monitoring, & Evaluation Capability. As a member of the Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation Capability team, you will conduct research, monitoring, and evaluation services at the highest levels of quality and rigor to generate evidence-based insights. The successful candidate will play a leadership role on our work with the U.S. Department of Education. In this role, you will serve as a strategic thinker and leader as we continue to grow our evaluation work with the Institute of Education Sciences (IES). You will design and lead impact, implementation, and descriptive evaluations of education interventions, programs, and policies. The ideal candidate will have subject matter and policy expertise in K-12 or postsecondary education.

Core Responsibilities: 

  • Provide direction and intellectual leadership on education evaluation projects, the design or execution of impact and descriptive analyses, or other technical tasks, including associated teams and budgets.

  • Contribute subject matter and policy expertise in K-12 or postsecondary education particularly focused on the Every Student Succeeds Act or Higher Education Act.

  • Review, analyze, and synthesize information using appropriate practices and techniques and ensure that projects are conducted with sound practices and techniques.

  • Conduct impact and implementation studies of educational strategies to improve the outcomes for all students, with specific attention to students most underserved.

  • Manage project teams and work collaboratively as part of a team by communicating respectfully, meeting deadlines, and exercising initiative to resolve complex challenges.

  • Represent Abt in a professional manner and effectively communicate with clients, external partners, and the public.

  • Develop and disseminate project deliverables and other products to share project findings through papers, technical reports, client briefings, presentations, blog posts, podcasts, videos and/or social media.

  • Lead business development activities including proposal writing and development.

  • Cultivate and maintain excellent business development relationships with clients and external partners.

Salary: approximately $105,000 to $168,000 for Senior Associate level and $139,000 to $222,000 for Principal Associate level

  • Expert understanding of the Higher Education Act, including post-secondary content expertise.

  • Significant understanding of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), including expertise in one of the following areas: trauma-informed care; educator quality; turning around low performing schools; out-of-school time, etc.

  • Demonstrated technical expertise with mixed-methods research and evaluation, especially for continuous improvement efforts and systems change.

  • Experience leading needs assessment and continuous improvement efforts.

  • Significant experience working on IES evaluations as PD, DOA, or PI

  • In-depth knowledge of What Works Clearinghouse standards.

  • A record of publications, presentations, and other knowledge-dissemination activities.

  • Aptitude and interest in mentoring less-experienced staff and managing multidisciplinary teams.

  • A commitment to incorporating principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion into research and interactions with colleagues. This includes prioritizing understanding multiple alternative perspectives and embracing diverse perspectives, abilities, racial/ethnic and cultural backgrounds, ages, gender identities and expressions, educational experiences, and life stories.

  • Demonstrated experience translating research and making it accessible to practice, policy, and/or government audiences.

  • Demonstrated success with business development and proposal or grant writing.

  • A well-rounded interpersonal skill set with a demonstrated ability to build relationships with clients, funders, and education leaders, and to work effectively in a team environment.

  • Senior Associate Level: Master’s degree + 13 years of relevant experience or PhD + 8 years of relevant experience

  • Principal Associate Level: Master’s degree + 15 years of relevant experience or PhD + 10 years of relevant experience
