Researcher, Early Childhood Education

Overview

AIR is looking to hire a Researcher to work with leading AIR scholars in the area of early childhood education, joining our Learning Supports Program Area within AIR’s Human Services Division. AIR is seeking a colleague with particular expertise in performing cost, cost-effectiveness, benefit-cost analysis of early childhood programs and in state and federal policy around childcare subsidies.

 

This position can be remote or located out of any of the following AIR locations: Arlington, Virginia; Rockville, Maryland; Chicago, Illinois; Waltham, Massachusetts; Chapel Hill, North Carolina; or Sacramento, California.

Responsibilities

The Researcher/Senior Researcher will work on several projects with responsibilities that may include:

  • Managing or leading tasks in the area of early childhood and/or cost studies, with assumption of greater responsibility over time
  • Collaborating with colleagues in the early childhood hub to identify and develop new project opportunities 
  • Supporting the development of research proposals in collaboration with senior AIR scholars or partners
  • Developing conceptual frameworks that guide project work (e.g., logic models, project plans)
  • Applying appropriate techniques to collect, analyze, and report resource and cost data
  • Preparing technical reports and journal articles and presenting findings to diverse audiences, including clients and the public
  • Supervising staff and providing feedback on the work of others

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, and Experience:

  • Doctoral degree in child development, developmental psychology, education, economics, public policy, educational psychology, or a related field OR Master’s degree in child development, developmental psychology, education, economics, public policy, educational psychology, or a related field with a minimum of 4 years of professional experience
  • At least 4 years of experience supporting or managing research projects in early childhood
  • At least 2 years of experience leading or supporting educational cost analyses
  • Familiarity with state and federal policy around childcare subsidies, market rate surveys, and high-quality early childhood programs
  • Experience developing research proposals and grants
  • Experience communicating results of research studies to policymakers, practitioners, and diverse audiences

 Skills:

  • Skills in using state-of-the art cost analysis methods (e.g., the ingredients approach)
  • Ability to effectively manage research projects or tasks
  • Strong writing and presentation skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to manage competing timelines and multiple projects
